How does TPN work?
Total parenteral nutrition (TPN) is an intravenous solution that provides nutrition to individuals who cannot eat or drink. The solution consists of fats, proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and electrolytes. TPN is typically given through a small catheter inserted into the person’s vein, and is slowly infused over several hours.
How long does TPN infusion take?
TPN infusion can take anywhere from 8 to 24 hours. The length will shorten over time. You can opt to receive your treatment overnight while you’re asleep.
How long will I have to receive TPN?
Depending on your condition, you might need to receive infusions from our TPN pharmacy for short- or long-term. Some patients require TPN care to return to oral feeding. Others might have more serious conditions and need TPN for long-term life support.
Will I have bowel movements while on TPN?
You will still have bowel movements while receiving TPN. Your digestive system has to eliminate waste and old cells. However, your bowel movements will not be as frequent as before.
Can I eat while on TPN?
You might be able to eat while on TPN if the treatment’s goal is to supplement your nutrition. However, eating while on TPN when you have gastrointestinal conditions can cause problems.
