What Is Tecfidera?
Tecfidera (dimethyl fumarate) is a prescription-based medication used to treat relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS). MS is a chronic disorder that affects a person’s central nervous system and causes inflammation.
Tecfidera belongs to the class of drugs known as fumaric acid esters and is available as a capsule or tablet. The drug is administered orally, either twice daily with food or as a single dose with food.
Tecfidera can help reduce the relapse rate of MS and its associated symptoms, such as muscle weakness and impaired coordination. It can also help reduce the severity of flares in Crohn’s disease.
However, the following patients are advised not to take this drug:
- Pregnant women
- Breastfeeding mothers
- Patients with a history of liver disease or progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy

What Is Tecfidera Used To Treat?

Dosing
The dose of Tecfidera depends on the patient’s age, weight, and medical conditions. However, below are the recommended usual doses.
Dose for Multiple Sclerosis (MS):
Starting dose: At first, 120 mg delayed-release capsules should be given twice daily. After 7 days, the doctor can increase the dose.
Maintenance dose: After the first week, Tecfidera will be maintained at 240 mg twice orally daily for the recommended duration.
For patients who cannot take 240 mg of the drug, the dose will be maintained at 120 mg or as prescribed by the doctor.

Common side effects include:
- Flushing
- Abdominal pain
- Nausea
- Diarrhea

Rare side effects include:
- Chest pain
- Ulcers
- Rapid heart rate
