Imiquimod 3.75% (Zyclara) Introduction and Uses
Zyclara is a brand-name prescription medication. The active ingredient in this product is imiquimod, which is in a drug class called immune response modifiers.
Imiquimod 3.75% cream (for topical use) is FDA-approved to treat:
- Actinic keratosis (scaly patches on the skin due to long-term sun exposure) of the face and balding scalp in adults with healthy immune systems
- Warts on the outside of the genital and around the anal areas in individuals at least 12 years old who have healthy immune systems
This medication is available as a topical cream supplied in pump bottles or single-use packets.
Imiquimod 3.75% (Zyclara) Mechanism of Action
Although its exact mechanism is not fully understood, imiquimod activates the body’s immune system by stimulating the production of cytokines, including interferon-alpha and other immune signaling proteins, which help the body eliminate abnormal or virus-infected skin cells. Imiquimod does not kill viral cells directly.
