What Is TPN?

TPN (Total Parenteral Nutrition) is an intravenous or IV method of feeding that uses a formula containing minerals, electrolytes, vitamins, sugar, fat, and carbohydrates to deliver daily nutrition to those who cannot absorb nutrients through their gastrointestinal tract.

How it Works

(TPN) Total Parenteral Nutrition is infused through a large vein, bypassing the gastrointestinal tract. TPN infusion helps to provide daily nutrients when the body does not have a functioning gastrointestinal tract such as in some stages of ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease.

Taking TPN Safely

TPN is always stored in the refrigerator until ready for use. It should be removed from the refrigerator and brought to room temperature for 2 hours before being infused into the vein. Use sterilized dressing to prevent infection and contamination. Check for signs of blockage and keep injection area sterilized.

How long does TPN take to administer?

TPN is usually used for 10 to 12 hours a day, five to seven times a week. Most TPN patients administer the infusion for 12 to 14 hours during the night so that they are free of administering during the day. For your convenience, we also offer a travel pouch to place under clothing if feeding during the day.
