What Is Jadenu?

Jadenu is a prescription medication used to treat patients who have high levels of iron that get stored in their bodies due to repeated blood transfusions or a blood disorder known as non-transfusion-dependent thalassemia. Jadenu works by binding to iron and removing the excess iron from the bloodstream. The generic name for Jadenu is deferasirox. It belongs to a class of drugs called iron chelators.

Patients with certain diseases such as anemia may sometimes require multiple blood transfusions, which can lead to excess iron in the body. Over the long term, this buildup of iron can damage important organs like the heart, liver, and pancreas. Removing the excess iron with Jadenu may reduce the risk of developing certain diseases such as liver cirrhosis, suy giáp, and diabetes. Jadenu can be prescribed alone or with other medications.

Jadenu comes in 90, 180, and 360 mg tablets. The medication should be taken at the same time each day. The tablets can be ingested with water or other drinks. Jadenu should be taken on an empty stomach or with a very light, low-fat meal (<7% fat content) under 250 calories. Avoid fatty and high-calorie foods close to the time you take Jadenu as this may lead to decreased absorption of the medication and decrease its effect. It is also important to not take any antacids that contain aluminum with Jadenu, as this can affect how Jadenu works.

Patients who have difficulty swallowing tablets may crush the tablets and mix them with soft foods such as yogurt and applesauce. If you do this, make sure you consume the mixture immediately after mixing it. Do not mix the medication and allow it to sit for a period of time. In addition to tablets, Jadenu is available as sprinkle granules for patients who prefer to mix Jadenu with food.

The dosage you are prescribed will depend on your condition, weight, lab tests, and how you respond to the treatment. Certain side effects may make it necessary to lower the dosage or stop treatment.

Jadenu and Pregnancy

Jadenu in pregnancy has not yet been examined in a well-controlled study. Therefore, Jadenu should only be used in pregnancy if the doctor determines that the benefits outweigh the risk to the fetus.
