What Is Tecentriq?
Tecentriq (atezolizumab) is a chemotherapy medication that’s used for the treatment of certain types of metastatic (spread to other parts of the body) or unresectable (untreatable with surgery) cancer (e.g., lung cancer, liver cancer, melanoma, and alveolar soft part sarcoma). It can be used by itself, or it can be used together with other chemotherapy medications, depending on the type of cancer and how severe it is. Tecentriq was given accelerated approval in March 2019 by the U.S. Administración de Alimentos y Medicamentos.
How Does Tecentriq Work?
Tecentriq is known as an immune checkpoint inhibitor. The immune system has checkpoints, which are proteins on cells that help control how well your immune system works. Cancer cells can sometimes use these checkpoints to hide from the immune system, which makes it harder for the immune system to find and attack cancer cells. Tecentriq blocks a protein called PD-L1 (an immune checkpoint) on cancer cells from working. This allows the T cells of your immune system to fight and attack the cancer cells.
What is Tecentriq Used For?
Tecentriq is approved to treat the following types of cancer:
- Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC): Tecentriq is used alone or together with other chemotherapy, depending on the type of NSCLC and how severe it is.
- Small cell lung cancer: Tecentriq is used together with carboplatin or etoposide.
- Hepatocellular carcinoma: Tecentriq is used with bevacizumab in people who haven’t previously received chemotherapy.
- Melanoma: Tecentriq is used with cobimetinib and vemurafenib in people with a specific type of melanoma called BRAF-V600 mutation-positive melanoma.
- Alveolar soft part sarcoma (ASPS): Tecentriq is used alone for treatment in adults and children aged 2 years and older with ASPS.

Direction for Use
In general, the dose of Tecentriq is either 840 mg every 2 weeks, 1,200 mg every 3 weeks, or 1,680 mg every 4 weeks. For children 2 years of age and older using Tecentriq for ASPS, the typical dose is 15 mg/kg of body weight (up to 1,200 mg) every 3 weeks. If you’re having side effects from the medication, your healthcare provider will adjust your dose.
Tecentriq is given as an infusion into the veins by a trained healthcare professional. The first infusion is given over 1 hour. If the first infusion is tolerated well, the following infusions can be given over 30 minutes instead.
The length of time you need to be on Tecentriq will depend on the type of cancer. For example, people with metastatic NSCLC and ASPS typically continue to receive Tecentriq until the cancer has progressed and worsened or until they’re no longer tolerating the medication.
Tecentriq Side Effects
The most common side effects reported in people taking Tecentriq include:
- Fatigue (48%)
- Low appetite (25%)
- Nausea (24%)
- Cough (22%)
- Shortness of breath (22%)
Other possible side effects include:
- Skin reactions (e.g., rash, itching, blisters)
- Dolor de cabeza
- Infections
- Joint or muscle pain
Tecentriq can also damage some of your organs and make them not work as well. The medication can cause lung, kidney, liver, colon, hormone gland, adrenal gland, and thyroid inflammation. It can also raise your liver enzymes, which could potentially lead to liver problems. The medication can also cause low thyroid hormone levels and low blood cell counts, which raises your risk for infections. Your provider will likely draw labs during treatment with Tecentriq to monitor and make sure the medication isn’t damaging your organs. Make sure to tell your provider about all of your medical problems before starting Tecentriq to ensure the medication is as safe for you as possible.
Talk to your provider if you’re pregnant, thinking of becoming pregnant, or breastfeeding before or during treatment with Tecentriq. This is because the medication can potentially cause harm to babies when taken by pregnant or breastfeeding mothers.
