¿Qué es Promacta?

Promacta is a once-daily prescribed oral medication designed to help restore blood platelet counts that are reduced by chronic disease or cancer treatments. The generic name of Promacta is eltrombopag, which is also the active ingredient that enables the drug to work. Promacta can be used in adults and children aged 1 year and older.

Promacta is one of the medications categorized as agonistas del receptor de trombopoyetina, typically referred to as TPO-RAs. Thrombopoietin, or TPO, is a hormone produced by the body that regulates the production and renewal of platelets in the blood (a process that takes place within the bone marrow). TPO-RAs can assist in the effectiveness of TPO’s stimulation of the bone marrow, which in turn can help increase platelets.

¿Para qué se utiliza el Promacta?

Promacta can be used to treat certain blood disorders that affect the body’s ability to produce platelets, which are the blood cells that play a vital role in the clotting process. Platelets help stop bleeding when a blood vessel is injured. The lifespan of a platelet is, however, around 7 to 10 days. If they are not replenished, there is a high chance of hemorrhage or poor wound healing.

Some medical conditions that can lower the body’s ability to maintain a healthy platelet count include:

  • Chronic immune thrombocytopenia, or ITP, which can be caused by hepatitis or HIV infections.
  • Severo aplastic anemia, or SAA, which could result from an autoimmune disorder, cancer treatments, certain viral infections, or exposure to toxic chemicals.
  • Chronic hepatitis C, or HCV, which is a viral infection that can damage the liver and can also lead to thrombocytopenia with its associated risk of bleeding issues.

How Is Promacta Taken or Administered?

Promacta can be taken orally. It comes in both tablet form and as an oral suspension. Patients who have trouble swallowing or taking pills will find the oral suspension form more convenient. Promacta does not need to be taken with a meal. Because of possible drug interactions, Promacta should not be taken less than 4 hours after or 2 hours before other medications.

Patients with chronic ITP typically start at a dosage of 50 mg once a day. Children under the age of six usually start with a 25 mg dosage. Based on platelet count tests, the dosage may be adjusted accordingly, with a maximum dosage level of 75 mg daily.

Patients with chronic hepatitis C typically start at 25 mg once a day. The maximum dose is 100 mg daily.

When treating severe aplastic anemia, healthcare providers may need to fully assess a range of patient factors such as body weight, age, and prior treatments to determine the correct dosage.
