Some healthcare providers call it a selective immunosuppressant.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Is_Mayzent\"><\/span>What Is Mayzent?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Mayzent is a brand-name prescription medication. The active ingredient in this product is siponimod, which belongs to the medication class known as <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/departments\/neurological\/depts\/multiple-sclerosis\/ms-approaches\/sphingosine-1-phosphate-receptor-modulators\">sphingosine 1-phosphate receptor modulators<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The mechanism as to how this medication works isn\u2019t specifically known.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, researchers think it works on the immune system by preventing white blood cells called lymphocytes from migrating to the brain and spinal cord. By doing this, it helps reduce tissue damage in people with relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether this medication helps repair damaged myelin in humans isn\u2019t known. However, it has been shown to support regeneration in animal studies.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Is_Mayzent_Used_For\"><\/span>What Is Mayzent Used For?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The FDA approved this product to treat adults with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Clinically_isolated_syndrome_CIS\"><\/span>Clinically isolated syndrome (CIS)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>CIS is when the first episode of symptoms characteristic of MS appears. However, they don\u2019t meet the criteria for a clinical diagnosis. CIS may progress to multiple sclerosis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Relapsing-remitting_MS_RRMS\"><\/span>Relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>RRMS is when the disease progresses with alternating periods of worsening symptoms (relapses) and partial recovery (remission).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Active_secondary_progressive_MS_SPMS\"><\/span>Active secondary progressive MS (SPMS)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Over time, most people with RRMS eventually develop SPMS. In this stage of MS, your disability worsens. Relapses may occur, but remissions are rare in this stage.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_To_Use_Mayzent_Properly\"><\/span>How To Use Mayzent Properly<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Mayzent is available as an oral tablet in the following strengths:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>0.25 mg<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1 mg<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2 mg&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Take the dosage exactly as prescribed and at the same time each day. Don\u2019t take less, more, or take the medication for longer than prescribed. You may take this medicine with or without food.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Never stop taking this medicine without consulting your healthcare provider first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Follow the instructions on the prescription label. If you\u2019re not sure how to use the medicine, seek help from your prescriber or pharmacist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Swallow the tablet whole with about 8 ounces of water. Avoid splitting, chewing, or crushing them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your provider will likely start treatment on a low dose, which may be gradually increased over the first 4 or 5 days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This medication may cause a slow heart rate, which is more likely to occur during the first 6 hours after you take the first dose.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You will have a test called an electrocardiogram (ECG) to measure the electrical activity of the heart. This test is run twice: once before the first dose, and once 6 hours after the first dose.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first dose is taken at a medical facility. Use effective contraception during treatment and for 10 days after your last dose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No one knows if this medication passes into breast milk or if it affects a breastfed infant. It\u2019s best to avoid breastfeeding during treatment with this medication.
