The active substance in this product is zanubrutinib, which is a member of a class of medications called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/publications\/dictionaries\/cancer-terms\/def\/protein-kinase-inhibitor\">kinase inhibitors<\/a>. It works by blocking an abnormal protein which signals cancer cells to divide rapidly.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The U.S. FDA has approved Brukinsa to treat certain adults with the following conditions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-mantle-cell-lymphoma-mcl\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Mantle_cell_lymphoma_MCL\"><\/span><strong>Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL)<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>MCL is a rare, fast-growing cancer that originates in the white blood cells. Brukinsa may be prescribed for adults with MCL who have previously received at least one treatment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-waldenstrom-s-macroglobulinemia-wm\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Waldenstroms_macroglobulinemia_WM\"><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dana-farber.org\/cancer-care\/types\/waldenstroms-macroglobulinemia#:~:text=Waldenstr%C3%B6m's%20macroglobulinemia%20(WM)%20is%20an,and%20a%20weakened%20immune%20system.\"><strong>Waldenstr\u00f6m\u2019s macroglobulinemia<\/strong><\/a><strong> (WM)<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a rare, slow-growing cancer that starts in the white blood cells called B-cells.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-marginal-zone-lymphoma-mzl\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Marginal_zone_lymphoma_MZL\"><\/span><strong>Marginal zone lymphoma (MZL)<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>MZL is a rare, slow-growing cancer that causes B-cells to divide rapidly. A provider may prescribe Brukinsa for adults with MZL if they failed to respond to previous treatment or their cancer has returned.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-chronic-lymphocytic-leukemia-cll-or-small-lymphocytic-lymphoma-sll\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Chronic_lymphocytic_leukemia_CLL_or_small_lymphocytic_lymphoma_SLL\"><\/span><strong>Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) or small lymphocytic lymphoma (SLL)<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>CLL and SLL are the same disease. However, in individuals with CLL, cancer cells are present mostly in their blood and bone marrow. On the other hand, cancer cells are found mostly in the lymph nodes in people with SLL.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-follicular-lymphoma-fl\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Follicular_lymphoma_FL\"><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/22606-follicular-lymphoma\"><strong>Follicular lymphoma<\/strong><\/a><strong> (FL)<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a slow-growing cancer that starts in the B-cells. A provider may prescribe Brukinsa with another medication (usually obinutuzumab) for adults with FL if they have failed to respond to previous treatment or their cancer has returned.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-when-was-brukinsa-approved\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"When_Was_Brukinsa_Approved\"><\/span>When Was Brukinsa Approved?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In November 2019, the FDA approved Brukinsa to treat adults with Mantle cell lymphoma.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two years later, the medication received FDA approval to treat Waldenstr\u00f6m\u2019s macroglobulinemia. The same year, the FDA granted <strong>accelerated approval<\/strong> for relapsed\/treatment-resistant marginal zone lymphoma.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In January 2023, Brukinsa received approval for chronic lymphocytic leukemia. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beigene.com\/\">BeiGene<\/a> (Brukinsa\u2019s manufacturer) announced that the FDA had granted <strong>accelerated approval<\/strong> for relapsed\/treatment-resistant follicular lymphoma.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Accelerated Approval Program allows earlier approval for certain medications that treat serious conditions. Approval is based on the results of initial trials. The FDA may decide to grant full approval if the confirmatory trials show the drug provides a clinical benefit.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the confirmatory trials show no benefit, the FDA may ask the drug maker to remove the drug from the market.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-use-brukinsa-properly\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_To_Use_Brukinsa_Properly\"><\/span>How To Use Brukinsa Properly<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This medication is available as an oral capsule; each capsule contains 80 milligrams (mg) of the active drug.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Take the recommended dosage exactly as prescribed and at the same time each day. Do not take less, more, or for longer than prescribed. This will help maintain consistent blood drug levels.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Never stop taking this medication without talking to your provider. Continue your dosing schedule even if you feel better.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Follow instructions on the prescription label. Talk to your provider or pharmacist if you do not understand the information on the prescription label.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Swallow the entire capsule with about 8 ounces of water. Avoid opening, chewing, or crushing it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your provider may reduce the dose or temporarily (sometimes completely) stop treatment. Dosage adjustments are based on your response to treatment and side effects.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-foods-to-avoid-during-brukinsa-treatment-nbsp\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Foods_To_Avoid_During_Brukinsa_Treatment\"><\/span>Foods To Avoid During Brukinsa Treatment&nbsp;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Avoid consuming Seville oranges, grapefruits, and their juices during treatment. These foods can cause the blood levels of the medication to rise and worsen the side effects.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-things-to-know-before-taking-brunkinsa\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Things_to_Know_Before_Taking_Brunkinsa\"><\/span>Things to Know Before Taking Brunkinsa<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Inform your provider if you have:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Bleeding problems<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Had recent surgery or plan to have one (you may need to stop taking this medication for any scheduled medical, surgical, or dental procedure)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An infection<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Had heart rhythm issues<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>High blood pressure<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Liver problems, including previous hepatitis B<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-use-in-pregnancy-and-lactation\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Use_in_Pregnancy_and_Lactation\"><\/span>Use in Pregnancy and Lactation<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Tell your provider if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. This medication can harm your unborn baby. Your provider may run a pregnancy test before starting treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Avoid getting pregnant during treatment and for 7 days after the last dose. Use effective birth control (contraception) during treatment and for 7 days after the last dose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Men should avoid getting their partners pregnant during treatment and for 7 days after the last dose. They should use effective birth control (contraception) during treatment and for 7 days after the last dose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tell your provider if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. It is unknown if this medication passes into breast milk.
