globulin<\/a>, which contains proteins (antibodies) that strengthen your immune system.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The FDA first approved this product in 2012. However, due to some concerns with its manufacturing processes, it was withdrawn from the market in 2016.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.admabiologics.com\/\">ADMA Biologics, Inc.<\/a>, which is the manufacturer of Bivigam, reintroduced it into the US market in 2019. As of 2023, Bivigam is FDA-approved for the treatment of primary immunodeficiency (PI) in adults and children ages 2 years and older.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Is_Bivigam_Used_To_Treat\"><\/span>What Is Bivigam Used To Treat?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A healthcare provider may prescribe this medication to treat adults and children with primary immunodeficiency.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Primary immunodeficiencies (PIs) are long-term immune disorders in which your immune system doesn\u2019t function as it should because parts of it are missing or not working properly. As a result, you\u2019re at an increased risk of catching an infection.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fpid.org\/wp\/\">Foundation for Primary Immunodeficiency Diseases<\/a>&nbsp;(FPID), over half a million US adults and children live with this condition [<a href=\"https:\/\/fpid.org\/wp\/\">1<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_Does_Bivigam_Work\"><\/span>How Does Bivigam Work?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Bivigam works by replacing missing antibodies in the immune system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_Is_Bivigam_Administered\"><\/span>How Is Bivigam Administered?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The usual dose for primary immunodeficiency is 300 \u2013 800 mg\/kg of body weight every 3 to 4 weeks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The medication is infused into your vein (IV) slowly.&nbsp; If you aren\u2019t experiencing any signs or symptoms of an infusion-related reaction, your provider will increase the infusion rate. However, tell your healthcare provider if you do experience an infusion-related reaction so they can slow or stop the infusion. They might examine you for other causes, lower your dose of Bivigam, or give you other medications to treat these side effects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Allergic_Reactions\"><\/span>Allergic Reactions<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Some people receiving Bivigam might experience severe allergic reactions, including&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/anaphylaxis\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20351468\">anaphylaxis<\/a>. Anaphylaxis is a potentially life-threatening allergic reaction that causes difficulty breathing, tightness in the throat, and dizziness.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seek emergency medical care right away if you develop the following symptoms after receiving this product:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Rash and itching<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hoarseness<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Breathing difficulty<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Trouble swallowing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Swelling of your hands, face, or mouth<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Blood_Clots\"><\/span>Blood Clots<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This medication can cause blood clots, especially in older adults or people with clotting disorders and heart problems. The risk may be higher if you\u2019re overweight, have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/diabetes#:~:text=Overview,hormone%20that%20regulates%20blood%20glucose.\">diabetes<\/a>, or use medications that harm your kidneys.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seek immediate care if you experience:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Swelling<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rapid weight gain<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Little or no urination<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Inflammation_of_the_Membranes_Surrounding_the_Brain\"><\/span>Inflammation of the Membranes Surrounding the Brain<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Health professionals call this type of inflammation aseptic meningitis syndrome or AMS. Though rare with Bivigam and other similar products, AMS can be dangerous.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Call your provider immediately if any of the following occurs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Severe headache<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stiff neck<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Drowsiness<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sensitivity to light<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pain when moving your eye<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nausea or vomiting<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Premature_Breakdown_of_Red_Blood_Cells\"><\/span>Premature Breakdown of Red Blood Cells&nbsp;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A rapid breakdown of red blood cells can cause hemolytic anemia.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Call your healthcare provider immediately if any of the following occurs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Fatigue&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Increased heart rate<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Yellowing of skin or eyes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dark-colored urine<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Acute_Lung_Injury\"><\/span>Acute Lung Injury<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In some users, fluid may build up in the lungs after receiving Bivigam or other similar products. Symptoms usually appear within 1 to 6 hours after treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Call your healthcare provider immediately if any of the following occurs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Trouble breathing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Chest pain<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Blue lips&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fever<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Infectious_Disease\"><\/span>Infectious Disease<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Because Bivigam contains donor antibodies, there\u2019s a small possibility that it may contain viruses or other disease-causing substances. Ask your provider about the risks and benefits of therapy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Who_Shouldnt_Receive_This_Medication\"><\/span>Who Shouldn\u2019t Receive This Medication?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyone with a history of anaphylactic or severe systemic reactions to human immunoglobulin shouldn\u2019t receive this medication.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Likewise, you shouldn\u2019t receive Bivigam if you\u2019re&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ameripharmaspecialty.com\/other-health-conditions\/iga-deficiency\/\">IgA deficient<\/a>&nbsp;with a history of hypersensitivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Be sure to tell your provider about any known allergies you have.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Use_in_Pregnancy_and_Lactation\"><\/span>Use in Pregnancy and Lactation<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There aren\u2019t any human or animal data about the safety of using this medication during pregnancy.
