Plasmapheresis removes these antibodies from the blood.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plasmapheresis works best when it is initiated early, typically within 7 days after the characteristic symptoms appear. However, you can expect the benefits even when you start it up to 4 weeks after the symptoms appear [<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/12076424\/#\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">].<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the American Society for Apheresis (ASFA) Guidelines 2019, plasmapheresis [<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ammtac.org\/docs\/articulos\/ASFA%202019%20guidelines.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">]:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speeds recovery<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reduces time on the ventilator<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benefits individuals with both mild and severe disease<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plasmapheresis is also useful in relapses, which occur in up to 5% to 10% of individuals receiving plasmapheresis or IVIG [<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ammtac.org\/docs\/articulos\/ASFA%202019%20guidelines.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">].\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Experts do not recommend combining plasmapheresis and IVIG in sequential order. Also, there is insufficient evidence to support the use of plasmapheresis after IVIG failure.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_Effective_Is_Plasmapheresis_for_Guillain-Barre_Syndrome\"><\/span>How Effective Is Plasmapheresis for Guillain-Barre Syndrome?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plasmapheresis performed over a 10-day period helps filter out autoantibodies and other immune molecules responsible for the symptoms. Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) treatment should be tailored on a case-by-case basis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generally, IVIG (0.4\u2009g\/kg body weight daily for 5 days) is as effective as plasmapheresis (200\u2013250\u2009ml plasma\/kg body weight in 5 sessions).
