Immune globulin is a blood product derivative. Treatment with immune globulin is typically referred to as immunoglobulin replacement therapy (IRT).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Immunoglobulin therapy is used to treat immune deficiencies, autoimmune disorders, inflammatory conditions, and certain infections. It works by supplying antibodies that help regulate overactive immune systems and protect against infections.<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Immune globulin is made of antibodies known as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ameripharmaspecialty.com\/ivig\/ivig\/\/immunoglobulins-ig\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">immunoglobulins<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which are found in blood plasma.&nbsp; Immune globulin is extracted from the blood plasma of healthy donors, and before being used for <a href=\"https:\/\/ameripharmaspecialty.com\/conditions-treatments\/immune-globulin-ig\/\">IVIG therapy<\/a>, the plasma is purified and examined for the presence of serious infections such as hepatitis and AIDS. In people with a weak immune system, it is used to treat, prevent, or lessen the severity of infections. It may strengthen your immune system, helping you to fight infections and stay healthy. In some cases, it can reduce immune-mediated destruction of blood cells (including red blood cells or platelets), which may help improve anemia or low platelet counts.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In patients with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ameripharmaspecialty.com\/other-health-conditions\/myositis\/\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">myositis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, immune globulin therapy may prevent the immune system from damaging muscle cells.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IRT works in different ways to treat different disease states, especially autoimmune disorders, with the ultimate goal to strengthen the immune system. Different brand names are used to treat different disease states. Immune globulin can be prescribed alone or with other medications simultaneously.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It contains IgG antibodies capable of opsonizing and neutralizing microbes and toxins.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-available-formulations\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Available_Formulations\"><\/span><b>Available Formulations<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Immune globulin is available in multiple different formulations and sizes depending on the brand. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is available as intravenous immune globulin <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ameripharmaspecialty.com\/ivig\/ivig\/\/ivig\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IVIG<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), subcutaneous immune globulin (<a href=\"https:\/\/ameripharmaspecialty.com\/ivig\/what-is-scig\/\">SCIG<\/a>), or intramuscular formulations.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It can be injected into the vein, subcutaneously under the skin, or intramuscularly into the muscle.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-directions-for-use-nbsp\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Directions_for_Use\"><\/span><b>Directions for Use&nbsp;<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Infusions can be administered either on a monthly, weekly, or daily basis, depending on the indication for use and the patient\u2019s status. Always administer each initial IV dose under medical supervision. Dosage is calculated based on patient weight and is dependent upon the route of administration. Not all products are interchangeable with regard to the route of administration; consult manufacturer labeling.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-pretreatment-nbsp\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Pretreatment\"><\/span><b>Pretreatment<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patients should be well hydrated prior to infusion. Avoid the gluteal region due to the risk of injury. Doses greater than 10 ml should be divided and injected into multiple sites.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-iv-administration\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"IV_Administration\"><\/span><b>IV Administration<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IVIG infusion can be administered as fast as 2 hours or as long as 24 hours, depending on disease state and severity and the physician\u2019s instructions. It should be administered in a separate infusion line from other medications. If a primary line is being used, flush with normal saline (NS) or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drugs.com\/dextrose-5-in-water.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dextrose 5 % in water<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (D5W) prior to administration. Dose, rate, or concentration of infusion may need to be decreased in patients who may be at risk of kidney failure.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doses vary depending on the disease state it is being used for. Typically, if the initial 30 minutes of the infusion is well-tolerated, the rate can be increased every 15 to 30 minutes as needed up to a maximum rate. Check with your physician about the rate and dose as well as the maximum rate allowed.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Decreasing the rate or stopping the infusion may help relieve some adverse effects (flushing, changes in pulse rate, or blood pressure). Epinephrine should be available during administration.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-subcutaneous-sq-administration\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Subcutaneous_SQ_Administration\"><\/span><b>Subcutaneous (SQ) Administration<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The initial dose should be administered in a healthcare setting capable of providing monitoring and treatment in the event of hypersensitivity. Follow the infusion device manufacturer&#8217;s instructions for filling the reservoir and preparing the pump using <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/323615\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aseptic technique<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Remove air from administration set and needle by priming. After the administration sites are clean and dry, insert subcutaneous needle and prime administration set. Attach sterile needle to administration set, gently pull back on the syringe to assure a blood vessel has not been inadvertently accessed (do not use needle and tubing if blood is present).&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Repeat for each injection site; deliver the dose by following instructions for the infusion device. Rotate the site(s) between successive infusions. Injection sites vary based on the immune globulin product.
