Abiraterone is an antineoplastic (anti-cancer) drug that belongs to a class called antiandrogen (hormonal) therapy. It works by inhibiting androgen (testosterone) production, which helps slow the growth and spread of prostate cancer. These drugs are usually cytotoxic chemical substances that are toxic to the cells, restrict their growth, prevent their division, and ultimately kill the cells. While abiraterone is sometimes grouped under cancer drug therapy, it differs from traditional chemotherapy because it does not directly kill cancer cells but instead reduces hormone levels that fuel cancer growth.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Handling_and_Safety_Precautions\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Handling and Safety Precautions<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Abiraterone is considered a hazardous medication. The formulations are not interchangeable; do not substitute between formulations. Abiraterone is available in three different doses: 125 mg, 250 mg, and 500 mg.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Different formulations:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zytiga 250 mg tablets are produced in film-coated and uncoated tablets.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zytiga 500 mg tablets are film-coated.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yonsa is a micronized (fine particle) formulation, available in 125 mg dose only.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generic formulations are available in 250 mg and 500 mg doses.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Directions_for_Use\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Directions for Use<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abiraterone is typically dosed at 500 mg or 1000 mg once a day. The dose may be lowered with impaired liver function. Most of the time, it is prescribed in combination with a corticosteroid therapy like prednisone or methylprednisone. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verify the correct doses and frequencies with your provider. The dose should not be more or less than what is prescribed. Since different formulations of abiraterone acetate have varying food and dosing requirements, ensure the correct formulation is selected.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swallow tablets whole with water; do not break, crush, chew, or allow the tablets to be dissolved in your mouth. Always tell your physician about any medications you are already taking. <\/span><b>Do not take any drug or medicine (even herbals, vitamins, or over-the-counter medications) without prior consent from your physician or pharmacist<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They may have some significant interactions with abiraterone.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Pregnancy_and_Abiraterone\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregnancy and Abiraterone<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abiraterone acetate is not approved for use in females. Therefore, males with female partners of reproductive potential should use effective contraception during treatment and for 3 weeks after the last dose. Abiraterone is available as uncoated, film-coated, or micronized tablets; the manufacturer recommends patients who are pregnant wear gloves if handling uncoated tablets, micronized tablets, or tablets that are broken, crushed, or damaged. This medication may cause fetal harm or fetal loss.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Side_Effects\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Side Effects<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As with any other medication, you may encounter side effects while taking abiraterone. A few things to remember are:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may not have all the side effects listed below. Many people may experience little to no side effects.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The severity of side effects may vary from person to person, so don\u2019t compare your side effects with other people\u2019s experiences.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of the side effects will improve when therapy is discontinued.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These side effects are easily manageable most of the time, either by readjusting the dose of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">abiraterone <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or using additional medications to treat the symptoms. AI is a condition in which the adrenal glands (located on top of the kidneys) do not produce enough of a hormone called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellmind.com\/cortisol-and-stress-how-to-stay-healthy-3145080\">cortisol<\/a>. Concurrent infection, stress, or interruption of daily corticosteroids can increase the risk of developing AI. Signs of AI include muscle weakness, chronic or long-lasting fatigue, weight loss, abdominal pain, or loss of appetite.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Liver_Complications\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Liver Complications<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In certain cases, abiraterone acetate can affect the liver and cause liver damage. The condition of the liver is monitored through blood tests that are able to detect liver function. Severe liver damage can lead to hepatitis or liver failure. Contact your physician immediately if you experience liver problems like dark urine, fatigue, lack of appetite, nausea, abdominal pain, light-colored stools, vomiting, or yellow skin or eyes. It can cause low potassium levels, which may lead to arrhythmias, and can cause fluid retention, which may lead to heart failure. It may also prolong certain electrical intervals of the heart (such as the QT interval), which can increase the risk of abnormal heart rhythms.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Low_Blood_Sugar\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low Blood Sugar<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low blood sugar as a side effect is more commonly seen in diabetic patients taking abiraterone. More specifically, it is seen in patients receiving certain diabetic medications like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.everydayhealth.com\/drugs\/repaglinide\">repaglinide<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uofmhealth.org\/health-library\/d04442a1\">pioglitazone<\/a>, rosiglitazone, etc. The dose for the diabetic medication may need to be adjusted to prevent low blood sugar (which can be life-threatening).
