While it has FDA-approved biosimilar forms, they aren\u2019t available to patients as of January 2023. This drug is a recombinant monoclonal antibody, making it a biologic medication. Recombinant antibodies are antibodies similar to the ones found in our bodies that help us to fight off foreign bodies and infections. Humira is administered as a subcutaneous injection (under the skin) and is available as a prescription-only medication.<\/p>\n<p>This medication works by interfering with the body\u2019s immune response. While the immune system is essential for fighting off illnesses caused by bacteria, fungi, and viruses, it can also respond to benign particles, such as pollen, leading to symptoms that adversely impact everyday life. In the case of autoimmune diseases, the immune system attacks and potentially destroys healthy tissue of the body, causing chronic illnesses such as rheumatoid arthritis.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, immunosuppressants can\u2019t change which cells the immune system targets; they can only weaken the response. Patients should store Humira away from sunlight, in the refrigerator. However, this drug is safe for up to 14 days if stored at room temperature (up to a maximum of 77\u00b0F) and away from sunlight. It cannot, however, be frozen. Do not attempt to thaw frozen medication; instead, dispose of it safely. Additionally, as with all other medications, Humira should be stored out of the reach of children and pets.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Since this is an injectable medication, it\u2019s essential to minimize the chances of infection during administration:<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>Before and after administration, use soap and water to wash your hands.<\/li>\n<li>Humira is given as a shot into the fatty part of the skin on the top of the thigh or the belly area.<\/li>\n<li>Only remove the needle cap immediately before injection.<\/li>\n<li>Administer in a hygienic space with a clean towel or cotton ball on hand.<\/li>\n<li>Use a new alcohol wipe to cleanse the injection site.<\/li>\n<li>Read the syringe expiration date.<\/li>\n<li>Depending on your diagnosis, you might have to take a high-loading dose of Humira followed by lower doses known as maintenance doses.<\/li>\n<li>The usual maintenance dose is 40 mg once every other week; however, there are some indications that have different or more frequent doses (always ask your doctor or pharmacist about your dose).<\/li>\n<li>If you will be giving yourself the shot, your doctor or nurse will teach you how to give the shot.<\/li>\n<li>Do not use the medication if the solution is cloudy, leaking, or has particles.<\/li>\n<li>Do not give into skin within 2 inches of the belly button.<\/li>\n<li>Do not give into tender, bruised, red, or hard skin.<\/li>\n<li>Move the site where you give the shot with each shot.<\/li>\n<li>To make the injection feel better, take this drug out of the refrigerator and allow it to sit at room temperature for up to 30 minutes before use. Do not remove the cap or cover. Do not heat this drug.<\/li>\n<li>Throw the syringe\/auto-injector device away after use. Do not use the same syringe more than one time.<\/li>\n<li>Throw away needles in a needle\/sharp disposal box. Do not reuse needles or other items. If you experience any of the following, contact your physician immediately:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tiredness or weakness<\/li>\n<li>Swelling of tongue, lips, or face<\/li>\n<li>Unusual bruising or bleeding<\/li>\n<li>Itching, hives, or rash<\/li>\n<li>Trouble breathing<\/li>\n<li>Vision changes<\/li>\n<li>Raised bumps or scaly, red skin (may be pus-filled bumps)<\/li>\n<li>Pale skin<\/li>\n<li>Skin lump or growth<\/li>\n<li>Chest pain<\/li>\n<li>Numbness, tingling, or pain in the feet or hands<\/li>\n<li>Dizziness<\/li>\n<li>Sudden weight gain<\/li>\n<li>Liver problems<\/li>\n<li>Heart failure<\/li>\n<li>Signs of infection (like fever, chills, very bad sore throat, ear or sinus pain, cough, more sputum or change in color of sputum, pain with passing urine, mouth sores, or wounds that will not heal)<\/li>\n<li>Shortness of breath<\/li>\n<li>Difficulty swallowing<\/li>\n<li>Night sweats<\/li>\n<li>Persistent fever<\/li>\n<li>Hepatitis B reactivation<\/li>\n<li>Lupus-like syndrome (such as a rash on the cheeks or other body parts, getting sunburnt easily, muscle or joint pain, chest pain or shortness of breath, or swelling in the arms or legs)<\/li>\n<li>Tuberculosis reactivation<\/li>\n<li>Swollen gland<\/li>\n<li>Weight loss without trying<\/li>\n<li>Signs of high blood pressure (very bad headaches, dizziness, passing out, or change in eyesight)<\/li>\n<li>Signs of urinary tract infection (UTI) such as blood in the urine, burning or pain when passing urine, feeling the need to pass urine often or right away, fever, lower stomach pain, or pelvic pain<\/li>\n<li>Upper respiratory tract infection<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Patients may also experience the following less serious side effects:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Signs of a common cold, such as a runny or stuffy nose<\/li>\n<li>Headache<\/li>\n<li>Injection site irritation, redness, or pain<\/li>\n<li>Nausea<\/li>\n<li>Back pain<\/li>\n<li>Stomach pain or upset stomach<\/li>\n<li>Pain, redness, swelling, or other reaction where the injection was given.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These are not all of the side effects that may occur while on Humira.
