The virus that causes chickenpox \u2014 the varicella-zoster virus \u2014 also causes shingles.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you\u2019ve had chickenpox, the virus stays dormant (inactive) in your system for the rest of your life. You get shingles when the virus reactivates.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>GBS is a rare immune-mediated neurological condition. It causes muscle weakness and tingling sensations in the hands and feet. In severe cases, it can result in paralysis or respiratory failure.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Shingles_and_Guillain-Barre_Syndrome_Is_There_a_Link\"><\/span>Shingles and Guillain-Barre Syndrome: Is There a Link?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While a few reports have found a connection between shingles infection and Guillain-Barre Syndrome, a causal relationship is lacking. In simple terms, we have yet to know if a shingles infection causes GBS.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The authors of a 2021 case report described a case of GBS caused by varicella zoster virus reactivation (shingles) in a 68-year-old man with a history of multiple myeloma [<a href=\"https:\/\/journal.chestnet.org\/article\/S0012-3692(21)02114-0\/fulltext\">1<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The person received:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/ameripharmaspecialty.com\/ivig\/ivig\/\/ivig\/\">IVIG<\/a> for suspected GBS<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/ameripharmaspecialty.com\/cancer\/darzalex-and-its-role-in-treating-multiple-myeloma\/\">Daratumumab<\/a> for multiple myeloma (a rare cancer)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Acyclovir for shingles<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the authors, the person\u2019s symptoms improved with continued IVIG and acyclovir.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2001, a correspondence published in the \u201cNew England Journal of Medicine\u201d (NEJM) reported a case of GBS in a 73-year-old woman [<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/11187118\/\">2<\/a>]. The person received acyclovir and other medications. Unfortunately, the weakness in her legs worsened, confining her to bed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her condition improved following <a href=\"https:\/\/ameripharmaspecialty.com\/guillain-barre-syndrome\/plasmapheresis-for-guillain-barre-syndrome-benefits-risks-and-dose\/\">plasma exchange<\/a>, and she started a rehabilitation program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Early GBS symptoms typically appear 2 days to 8 weeks after rashes erupt. This is the period when you have to be most vigilant.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_May_Shingles_Trigger_GBS\"><\/span>How May Shingles Trigger GBS?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>No one exactly knows how shingles infection may trigger GBS.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, health experts believe specific molecules on the varicella-zoster virus may mimic those on your nerves. The CDC recommends two doses of Shingrix for adults 50 years and older. The vaccine is highly effective in preventing shingles and associated complications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, many people are concerned that Shingrix may cause GBS. Fortunately, the chances of getting GBS from the shingles vaccine are very low.
