This can happen from one of two things: Rh incompatibility or ABO incompatibility.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Rh_Incompatibility\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rh Incompatibility<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Rhesus factor, or Rh, is a protein found on the surface of red blood cells. Rh incompatibility is when the mother is Rh-negative, and the father is Rh-positive.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the baby is Rh-positive, like the father, the mother\u2019s immune system produces proteins (antibodies) that attack and destroy the baby\u2019s RBCs.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rh incompatibility is not much of an issue in the first pregnancy. However, in subsequent pregnancies with Rh-positive babies, it can cause severe problems.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"ABO_Incompatibility\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ABO Incompatibility<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another reason why HDN may occur is due to ABO, or blood type, mismatch.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This happens when the mother\u2019s blood type of A, B, or O doesn\u2019t match with the baby\u2019s blood type. HDN is most likely to occur when the mother\u2019s blood type is O, and the baby&#8217;s blood type is A or B.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is less harmful to the baby than Rh incompatibility in most cases.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n&nbsp;\r\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Hemolytic_Disease_of_the_Newborn_Symptoms\"><\/span>Hemolytic Disease of the Newborn Symptoms<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After delivery, a baby with HDN may appear swollen, pale (due to anemia), or yellow (due to jaundice). They may also have an enlarged heart, liver, or spleen.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other symptoms can include:<\/span>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A faster heart rate<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Small red or brown spots on the skin<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Difficulty breathing<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n&nbsp;\r\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Hemolytic_Disease_of_the_Newborn_Treatment\"><\/span>Hemolytic Disease of the Newborn Treatment<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If diagnosed after birth, treatment options for babies with HDN may include:<\/span>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frequent feeding and fluid administration.<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Light therapy (phototherapy) to break down extra <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/lab-tests\/bilirubin-blood-test\/#:~:text=Bilirubin%20is%20a%20yellowish%20substance,the%20bilirubin%20from%20your%20body.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bilirubin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ameripharmaspecialty.com\/ivig\/ivig\/\/ivig\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IVIG<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to prevent the mother\u2019s antibodies from attacking the baby&#8217;s RBCs.<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drugs to raise blood pressure if it is extremely low.<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exchange transfusion in severe cases. This involves removing the baby\u2019s blood and replacing it with donor blood.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breathing support using a breathing machine.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If diagnosed before birth, a healthcare provider may recommend preterm delivery. Another option may be administering blood to the baby through the umbilical cord. The blood helps treat anemia by providing the baby with red blood cells.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n&nbsp;\r\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Hemolytic_Disease_of_the_Newborn_Prevention\"><\/span>Hemolytic Disease of the Newborn Prevention<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A medicine called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rhogam.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RhoGAM<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Rho[D] immune globulin) is used to help prevent hemolytic disease due to Rh incompatibility. It\u2019s given as a shot that is typically administered at around the 28th week of pregnancy and 72 hours after birth.<\/span>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Getting your blood checked before pregnancy or during the first prenatal visit helps your provider assess the risk.
