A baby inherits half of these HPAs from the father and half from the mother [<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rcog.org.uk\/media\/tcga1t1e\/bjog-2019-regan-prenatal-management-of-pregnancies-at-risk-of-fet.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">].\u00a0<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the course of pregnancy, the baby\u2019s platelets can cross the placental barrier and reach the mother&#8217;s bloodstream without causing any issues.\u00a0<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, in NAIT, the mother\u2019s immune system fails to recognize HPAs obtained from the father. Consequently, the mother\u2019s immune cells produce antibodies (anti-HPAs) that destroy the baby\u2019s platelets. The exact reason behind this is still unknown.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Diagnosis\"><\/span>Diagnosis<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NAIT is often underdiagnosed.\u00a0<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Routine screening is not practiced unless there is a family history of the condition.
