What Is Darzalex?
Darzalex is the brand name for a monoclonal antibody drug called daratumumab. It is approved to treat a particular type of cancer called multiple myeloma, which affects the white blood cells. Darzalex is derived from living immune cells rather than chemicals and it is known as a biologic drug. Since Darzalex is a biologic that does not derive from chemicals, it cannot be copied exactly to produce a generic version.
Darzalex is a targeted monoclonal antibody treatment. It is designed to latch onto specific abnormal proteins in cancer cells and kill them without damaging healthy cells. This means it has fewer side effects than chemotherapy, which affects both cancer cells and normal cells.
Treatment for multiple myeloma can be different for every patient. Physicians may recommend observation if the cancer is slow-growing. Darzalex is only recommended for multiple myeloma under certain circumstances, such as when other treatments have not been successful or when the patient cannot receive a transplant of stem cells from their own body, which is often one of the first recommended treatments.
What Is Darzalex Used To Treat?
Darzalex is used to treat a type of cancer called multiple myeloma, which starts in the bone marrow. The marrow is the soft inner core of the bone, and it is responsible for producing red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Red blood cells transport oxygen throughout the body and white blood cells fight infection.
Sometimes, for reasons that are not entirely clear, one type of white blood cell, called a plasma cell, mutates. The mutation causes plasma cells to reproduce rapidly, producing abnormal antibodies that affect the immune system and the body’s ability to fight infections. When these plasma cells mutate and grow out of hand, they build up in the bone marrow and become cancerous.
Multiple myeloma can cause anemia because the bone marrow can no longer produce enough red blood cells. It can also cause increased susceptibility to infections because there are not enough healthy white blood cells to kill the pathogens. The buildup of the cancerous cells inside the bone can cause pain. It can also affect the bone structure, making it more susceptible to fractures.
Multiple myeloma typically begins in the vertebrae of the spine. Eventually, the cancerous cells can spread to other parts of the body via the bloodstream and cause tumors in several different places. The reason the condition is called multiple myeloma is that it causes tumors in multiple places at approximately the same time.

Directions for Use
Darzalex comes in vials of either 400 mg/20 ml or 100 mg/5 ml. Regardless of the strength, each vial represents a single dose of Darzalex. The fluid is mixed with saline solution and injected slowly into a vein via a process called infusion. Each Darzalex infusion takes place over several hours. With each dosage, doctors gradually increase the infusion speed until they find the one that works best for you. The initial infusion of Darzalex may take up to 7 hours, but subsequent infusions may only take 3 to 5 hours.
The precise dosage of Darzalex you receive depends on your weight, among other factors. Darzalex may be used alone or in combination with other medications.
