Growth hormone deficiency in children occurs when the pituitary gland does not produce enough growth hormone for normal growth.
- Slow or flat rate of growth
- Increased amount of fat around the waist
- The child may look younger and will often be much shorter than other children of the same age and gender
- Delayed tooth development
Treatment involves growth hormone replacement shots (injections), which are an artificial preparation usually given once a day. Older children can often learn how to give themselves the injections. Treatment can often last for several years.
