What Is Azacitidine?
Azacitidine belongs to a drug category called antineoplastic agents. Antineoplastic drugs are medications used to treat cancer. Other names for antineoplastic drugs are anticancer, chemotherapy, chemo, cytotoxic, or hazardous drugs. When using this medication, it is recommended that you take an antiemetic to help with nausea and vomiting.
The brand names for this medication in the U.S. are Onureg and Vidaza. These medications are available in the market in tablet and injection forms (intravenous and subcutaneous).
What is Azacitidine Used to Treat?
Azacitidine is used for acute myeloid leukemia, which is a type of cancer of the blood and bone marrow with excess immature white blood cells. It will interfere with the production of normal white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets.
It is also used for myelodysplastic syndromes which affect the production of blood cells. Azacitidine can be used in the refractory anemia subtype or refractory anemia with ringed sideroblasts, refractory anemia with excess blasts, refractory anemia with excess blasts in transformation, and chronic myelomonocytic leukemia.

Azacitidine Dosing Information
For acute myeloid leukemia for maintenance: take 300 mg once daily on days 1 to 14 of a 28-day cycle.
For myelodysplastic syndrome and acute myeloid leukemia in patients requiring low-intensity therapy: Your doctor will choose the subcutaneous or intravenous form, and the dose will be calculated depending on your body surface area.
Tablets:
- Take a missed dose as soon as you remember if it is still the same day.
- If you do not remember about the missed dose until the next day, skip the missed dose and go back to your normal dosing schedule.
- Do not take two doses on the same day.
Store tablets in the original container at room temperature in a dry place.
Injection:
Your doctor will let you know how and when to inject.
Azacitidine Side Effects
All drugs may cause side effects. However, many people have no side effects or only have minor side effects. Please be advised that potential side effects differ from one patient to another. Always consult with your pharmacist and your doctor if you can’t tolerate the side effects.
For tablets:
