What Is Abraxane?

Abraxane को परिचय is a chemotherapy medication currently available as a trademarked brand name. It is also available as a generic medication called paclitaxel. It is considered a systemic treatment used to treat metastatic cancer that has spread from one part of the body to another. Being a systemic treatment means that the medication travels through the bloodstream so that it can reach cells in other parts of the body, including cancer cells. Abraxane primarily works by blocking the action of proteins called microtubules, which are proteins that help cells divide. By doing this, it stops cancer cells from dividing and making new cells, and therefore blocks the growth of cancer cells.

Abraxane is available as an injectable solution that is administered intravenously by trained healthcare professionals at the doctor’s office, at clinics, or in hospitals. It is only available with a prescription written by your doctor.

What Is Abraxane Used To Treat?

Abraxane is used to treat a variety of cancers, such as metastatic breast cancer, metastatic pancreatic cancer, and advanced non-small cell lung cancer. More specifically, Abraxane is used for:

Metastatic breast cancer:
Abraxane is used after there has been failure of combination chemotherapy or relapse within 6 months of adjuvant chemotherapy. Adjuvant therapy is defined as therapy given in addition to the primary or initial therapy to maximize the effectiveness of treatment. The prior therapy that failed should have included an anthracycline unless it was clinically contraindicated.
Metastatic pancreatic cancer:
Abraxane is used as a first-line treatment in combination with another chemotherapy medication called gemcitabine.
Advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC):
Abraxane is used as a first-line treatment in combination with another chemotherapy medication called carboplatin. For treatment of advanced non-small cell lung cancer with Abraxane, patients cannot be candidates for any type of curative surgery or radiation therapy.

Abraxane will be given intravenously (IV) by trained healthcare professionals. Dosage is based on the type of diagnosis. Please see the following:

For metastatic breast cancer:

The recommended dosage of Abraxane is 260 mg/m2 intravenously over 30 minutes every 3 weeks.

For pancreatic cancer:

The recommended dosage of Abraxane is 125 mg/m2 intravenously over 30 to 40 minutes on days 1, 8, and 15 out of each 28-day cycle.
Administer gemcitabine on days 1, 8, and 15 out of each 28-day cycle immediately after Abraxane.

For non-small cell lung cancer:

The recommended dosage of Abraxane is 100 mg/m2 intravenously over 30 minutes on days 1, 8, and 15 out of each 21-day cycle.
Administer carboplatin on day 1 out of each 21-day cycle immediately after Abraxane.

A dose may be reduced or discontinued based on severe hematologic, cutaneous, neurologic, or gastrointestinal toxicities.

Abaxane Side Effects
