What Is Ziextenzo?

Ziextenzo (generic name: pegfilgrastim-bmez) is a type of medication known as a colony-stimulating factor that is produced by recombinant DNA technology. It stimulates the production, maturation, and activation of neutrophils (a type of white blood cell).

Pegfilgrastim has an advantage over its earlier version, filgrastim, in that it is pegylated, meaning it has undergone a biochemical modification process of bioactive molecules with polyethylene glycol (PEG), which reduces the frequency at which it has to be given to only once per chemotherapy cycle versus multiple doses per chemotherapy cycle with filgrastim.

What is Ziextenzo Used For?

Ziextenzo is used for the prevention of chemotherapy-induced neutropenia. Neutropenia is a condition where the number of neutrophils in your system becomes low. Neutrophils are a type of white blood cell, and they help your body fight infections, especially ones caused by bacteria.

Having neutropenia increases the risk of a person getting infections, and while most people can fight off infections using conventional treatments (e.g., taking antibiotics prescribed by their doctors), having neutropenia weakens your immune system, making it even more challenging for your body to fight off infections than it would be for a person without neutropenia.

Having neutropenia can also cause a very serious condition called neutropenic sepsis, a whole-body reaction to the infection, which could be potentially life-threatening.

Ziextenzo comes in a pre-filled syringe form of 6 mg already dissolved in 0.6 ml. It is administered as a subcutaneous injection (given under the skin to either outer upper arms, abdomen [except within 2 inches around the belly button], front middle thigh, or upper outer buttocks) as follows:

6 mg to be injected one time per chemotherapy cycle to be undergone, beginning at least 24 hours after completion of the chemotherapy cycle.

Ziextenzo should not be administered in the period between 14 days before and 24 hours after completion of chemotherapy.

Ziextenzo 6 mg pre-filled syringes should NOT be used for infants, children, or adolescents with a body weight less than 45 kg.
