However, in Guillain-Barr\u00e9 syndrome (GBS), the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy nerves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The term \u201cautoimmune\u201d is used because the patient\u2019s immune system of antibodies and white blood cells attack the body, causing damage to the myelin (nerve cell covering or insulation), which can lead to numbness and weakness [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gbs-cidp.org\/gbs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Infections and certain medical conditions can often serve as precursors to autoimmune responses and cause the onset of Guillain-Barre syndrome. The following are the most common triggering causes of GBS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-bacterial-triggers\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Bacterial_Triggers\"><\/span>Bacterial Triggers<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-campylobacter-jejuni\"><em>Campylobacter jejuni<\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Campylobacter jejuni<\/em> is a common bacterial pathogen that causes gastrointestinal infections, primarily leading to diarrhea. This bacterium is often contracted through the consumption of undercooked or contaminated poultry. It\u2019s one of the most frequently identified infectious triggers of Guillain-Barre syndrome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What causes GBS following this infection? Studies show that infections with this bacterium can trigger autoimmune responses. Approximately <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC88896\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">30-40% of GBS cases<\/a> are related to this bacterial infection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-haemophilus-influenzae\"><em>Haemophilus influenzae<\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Haemophilus influenzae<\/em> is one of the other bacterial causes of Guillain-Barre syndrome. This bacterium can cause respiratory infections, particularly in children and those with weakened immune systems. It may then trigger an abnormal immune response, leading to GBS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/11004133\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Haemophilus influenzae<\/em><\/a> is less commonly associated with the disease than campylobacter. However, it still presents a risk for some individuals. Understanding this connection helps in monitoring those who have previously contracted such infections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-viral-triggers\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Viral_Triggers\"><\/span>Viral Triggers<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-cytomegalovirus\"><em>Cytomegalovirus<\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/cmv\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20355358\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Cytomegalovirus<\/em><\/a> (CMV) is a type of herpes virus that can lead to chest infections or glandular fever. It can remain dormant in the body and reactivate under stress or illness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CMV is one of the potential triggering causes of Guillain-Barre syndrome in <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/cid\/article-abstract\/52\/7\/837\/300312\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">0.6 &#8211; 2.2 per 1000 cases<\/a>. It can provoke a strong immune response, particularly in immunocompromised individuals, and contribute to disease development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-epstein-barr-virus\">Epstein-Barr Virus<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Another viral cause of GBS is the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). This virus is known for causing infectious mononucleosis. It\u2019s prevalent in the general population, and while most people recover without complications, a small subset may develop GBS following infection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What causes GBS following an <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8217676\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EBV infection<\/a> is the immune system\u2019s attempt to eliminate the virus, but inadvertently damaging the myelin sheath of nerves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-hepatitis-e\">Hepatitis E<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the other viral causes of Guillain-Barre syndrome is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/hepatitis-e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hepatitis E<\/a> (HEV). HEV is primarily contracted through contaminated water and can lead to liver inflammation and jaundice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emerging evidence shows that infections with this virus may sometimes trigger Guillain-Barre syndrome. While HEV is relatively rare in developed countries, its association with GBS warrants attention, especially in endemic areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-zika-virus\">Zika Virus<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Zika virus, primarily spread through mosquito bites, causes mild symptoms such as fever, rash, and joint pain.
