occasionally the skin.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The term \u201cmucous membrane pemphigoid\u201d consists of two words:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Mucous membrane<\/strong>: Also called mucosa, the mucous membranes line the insides of organs and cavities.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Pemphigoid<\/strong>: Pemphigoid refers to tight bubbles of fluid (blisters) that do not open easily.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The most commonly affected sites are the mouth and eyes. However, other areas may also be involved, such as your nose, throat, and genitals.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_Common_Is_Mucous_Membrane_Pemphigoid\"><\/span>How Common Is Mucous Membrane Pemphigoid?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>MMP is a rare condition. According to the Genetic and Rare Disease Information Center (GARD), it affects fewer than 5,000 Americans [<a href=\"https:\/\/rarediseases.info.nih.gov\/diseases\/5913\/mucous-membrane-pemphigoid\">1<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, it is more common in older adults (50 years or older), and women are more likely than men to get this disorder.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Causes_Mucous_Membrane_Pemphigoid\"><\/span>What Causes Mucous Membrane Pemphigoid?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The exact cause is unknown. However, health experts believe a faulty immune response might be the culprit. For this reason, some consider it an autoimmune disorder.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In individuals with this disorder, the immune system produces proteins (autoantibodies) that attack the mucous membranes of the mouth, eyes, or other sites.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Researchers have yet to understand why this happens. However, they believe a combination of genetic and environmental factors may play a role.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a minority of cases, this disorder may result following certain prescription medications or surgery.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Studies also suggest the presence of specific autoantibodies may increase the risk of cancer [<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31106014\/\">2<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/ced\/article-abstract\/32\/6\/637\/6624471?redirectedFrom=PDF\">3<\/a>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Are_the_Symptoms_of_Mucous_Membrane_Pemphigoid\"><\/span>What Are the Symptoms of Mucous Membrane Pemphigoid?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Symptoms can vary depending on the site involved.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, the blisters in the mouth \u2014 oral mucous membrane pemphigoid \u2014 appear as red, painful ulcerated patches on the inner cheeks, gums, or roof of the mouth.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, the symptoms of ocular MMP, which affects the eyes, can include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A feeling of roughness on the inside of the eyelids<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Red or painful eye<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In-turning eyelashes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mucous discharge in the eye<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Shrinking of the space between the eye and eyelid<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sticking of the eyeball to the eyelid (partial or complete)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Thickening of the eye\u2019s surface<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Blindness (in severe cases)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Blisters that form on the nose, throat, and genitals may heal with scarring. Scarring in the food pipe (esophagus) can make swallowing difficult.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the skin is involved, blisters often appear on the scalp, face, trunk, or limbs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_Is_Mucous_Membrane_Pemphigoid_Diagnosed\"><\/span>How Is Mucous Membrane Pemphigoid Diagnosed?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Diagnosis begins with a physical exam, which helps your provider determine the location and type of blisters. If they suspect MMP, they will order additional tests and procedures, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Biopsy<\/strong>: Your provider removes a sample of tissue from the affected site and analyzes the sample under a microscope.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Immunofluorescence assay<\/strong>: The sample is stained with a chemical, making it distinctly visible under the microscope.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Blood test<\/strong>: In some cases, a blood sample can reveal the presence of autoantibodies in the blood.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Moreover, you may need imaging studies such as CT scans if your airway or food pipe is affected. They may also help if you have cancer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your provider may also refer you to a specialist, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>An ophthalmologist (an eye specialist) if they think you have signs of ocular MMP&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An ENT (ear, nose, throat) specialist<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A dermatologist (a skincare specialist)&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A dentist<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_Is_Mucous_Membrane_Pemphigoid_Treated\"><\/span>How Is Mucous Membrane Pemphigoid Treated?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There is no cure for MMP yet, and lesions rarely go away without treatment. Even with appropriate treatment, they may come and go periodically.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Treatment aims to control blistering, promote healing, and prevent complications. Before recommending specific treatment, your provider will discuss treatment options and their benefits\/risks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Treatment can vary depending on the severity of the condition and include [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8518905\/\">4<\/a>]:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Medications\"><\/span>Medications<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For mild-to-moderate cases, primary treatment includes dapsone, methotrexate, or tetracyclines (with or without topical corticosteroids).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have severe symptoms, your provider will likely recommend dapsone and oral or IV\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ameripharmaspecialty.com\/discontinued\/cyclophosphamide\/\">cyclophosphamide<\/a>\u00a0(with or without oral corticosteroids).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Wound_Care\"><\/span>Wound Care<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Wound care involves daily gentle cleaning, dressing, and topical medicines.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Eye_Care\"><\/span>Eye Care<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Eye care involves lubricating eye drops and silicon plugs to help reduce dryness.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Screening_for_Cancer\"><\/span>Screening for Cancer<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The risk of cancer may be higher in those with specific autoantibodies. Nonetheless, it is thought to remove causative antibodies from circulation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Mucous_Membrane_Pemphigoid_Whats_the_Outlook\"><\/span>Mucous Membrane Pemphigoid: What\u2019s the Outlook?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>How MMP progresses is often hard to predict. To make matters worse, many individuals do not respond to conventional therapy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There have been reports of long-lasting remissions (periods without symptoms) in some individuals. However, in most cases, the symptoms reappear.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thus, regular monitoring and follow-ups are recommended.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Luckily, there seems to be no connection between MMP and lifespan.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Is_the_Difference_Between_Pemphigus_and_Pemphigoid\"><\/span>What Is the Difference Between Pemphigus and Pemphigoid?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Both are blisters, but the pemphigus is fragile and opens easily.
