Other signs and symptoms include:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weak and rapid pulse<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vomiting\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diarrhea<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dizziness\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fainting<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anaphylaxis is one of the rarest IVIG complications, with only 23 cases reported in the scientific literature until 2017 [<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/27412077\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">]. According to reports, severe anaphylaxis occurs in about 20 out of 1 million infusions [<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/34562316\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">].<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The risk of anaphylaxis may be higher in individuals with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ameripharmaspecialty.com\/ivig\/can-you-use-ivig-for-iga-deficiency\/#\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IgA deficiency<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Most anaphylactic reactions occur in people younger than 18 and during their first IVIG administration.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most IVIG products today have very low IgA levels, further cutting down the risk.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Arrhythmia\"><\/span>Arrhythmia<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat) is also one of the rarest IVIG complications and the least investigated. In arrhythmia, the heart beats too slowly, too quickly, or has an irregular rhythm.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only a handful of studies have looked into IVIG-associated heart rhythm issues.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, in 2015, Turkish researchers reported a case of irregularly fast heartbeat during IVIG infusion in two newborns [<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4574787\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">]. It was the first case of IVIG-associated arrhythmia in newborns.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, they couldn\u2019t establish a cause-and-effect relationship and concluded it could have been a coincidence.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Likewise, a 2023 investigation found a higher incidence of cardiac arrest and irregularly fast heartbeat in those receiving IVIG [<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jacionline.org\/article\/S0091-6749(22)02419-8\/fulltext\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">]. As a result, waste products accumulate in the blood. Symptoms of AKI include:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Decreased urine output<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swelling in the legs, ankles or feet<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shortness of breath<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fatigue<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Irregular heartbeat<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chest pain or pressure<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe kidney damage can lead to seizures, coma, or death.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptoms typically appear within the first 10 days after starting IVIG and are generally reversible. Nonetheless, temporary hemodialysis may be necessary in about 30% of the cases.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IVIG-associated AKI is a well-known but rare IVIG complication. The exact incidence is unknown but is thought to affect less than 1% of all individuals receiving IVIG [<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8818106\/#\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">].<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How IVIG causes kidney injury is still under investigation. However, the following factors may increase the risk:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Older age (65 or older)<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diabetes<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Concomitant use of medicines that damage the kidney (nephrotoxic medicines)<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Products that contain sucrose or mannitol<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">History of kidney disease<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rapid, high-dose infusion<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you fall into a high-risk group, your doctor will check your kidney function before each IVIG infusion. It is defined as a new acute lung injury (ALI) that develops during or within 6 hours of infusion.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Symptoms include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Rapid breathing\u00a0<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Shortness of breath<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Fever<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Low blood pressure<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Rapid heart rate<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The exact incidence of IVIG TRALI is unknown, possibly due to underreporting and misdiagnosis.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, how IVIG causes TRALI is unclear. However, case reports suggest rapid, high-dose infusions may increase the risk [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6798284\/#\">6<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Treatment is supportive and involves measures to ensure proper breathing and fluid balance.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Aseptic_Meningitis\"><\/span><span id=\"5_Aseptic_Meningitis\" class=\"ez-toc-section\"><\/span>Aseptic Meningitis<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Aseptic meningitis is a rare but significant IVIG complication. In IVIG-induced meningitis, the membranes surrounding your brain and spinal cord (meninges) become inflamed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The main features of IVIG-induced meningitis are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Headache<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Neck stiffness\/pain\u00a0<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Extreme light sensitivity (photophobia)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Most cases are reported during the first infusion. Studies suggest nearly 7 cases of meningitis occur per 10,000 infusions.<\/p>\n<p>The mechanism of IVIG-induced meningitis is poorly understood.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Health experts believe meninges may become inflamed due to the direct toxic effect of immunoglobulins or the hypersensitivity reactions elicited by other components in the product.
