Growth hormone deficiency in children occurs when the pituitary gland does not produce enough growth hormone for normal growth.

Symptoms

Slow or flat rate of growth

Increased amount of fat around the waist

The child may look younger and will often be much shorter than other children of the same age and gender

Delayed tooth development

Treatments

Treatment involves growth hormone replacement shots (injections), which are an artificial preparation usually given once a day. Older children can often learn how to give themselves the injections. Treatment can often last for several years.
