Oral Chemotherapy

M.D. Managed Treatment

AmeriPharma’s Medical Director, Dr. Luther D. Glenn, M.D., Board Certified Oncologist and Hematologist, oversees all oncology therapies. He acts as an extra resource for prescribers, provides education to pharmacists, and helps develop protocols for patient management.

FAQs

What is oral chemotherapy?

Oral chemotherapy is a cancer-fighting drug given by mouth in tablet, capsule, or liquid form. It is prescribed by your doctor, nurse practitioner, or physician’s assistant. Today, many cancer patients receive oral chemotherapy as treatment.

What are the advantages of oral chemotherapy?

Oral chemotherapy offers several advantages over the parenteral route. Among the biggest advantages are patient convenience and flexibility in timing and location of administration. Another advantage involves flexibility of drug exposure by providing more prolonged therapy compared with intermittent IV exposure.

How does it work?

Oral chemotherapy kills or weakens cancer cells, and it usually comes in the form of a pill. As with other prescription medications, people can take oral chemotherapy drugs at home. While intravenous chemotherapy can be life-saving, it can also be inconvenient and potentially painful.
